Wednesday night at Boyd, we had what we hope to be a very popular new activity being shared with our students…HBO regular Lamont Carey visited the Boyd library for a workshop on how to perform at a poetry slam. He spent time with students from 6th grade to seniors, sharing his love of writing and helping the group to write their own slams. They spent about an hour in the library, creating and learning to perform their deeply personal poems with each other while Lamont led them through the process. Later in the evening, Lamont, the students and all spectators headed down to the auditorium for a live slam. Lamont performed some of his award winning slams from HBO and Def Jams. He built a show around his 4 performances by featuring some of the students from the workshop. The kids wrote, practiced and “slammed” their poetry with all the polish of a professional. The works that they performed were raw, truthful, eloquent, rhythmic and moving. The workshop was a prelude to the actual event to take place in April. Watch for the date to be announced and plan to attend this unique performance.
